Bridging the gaps of modelling and dreams Part 1
Fashion agreed on choosing taller women because they are visible on runaway. Height has always been synonymous with stature. A taller structure offers a commanding presence at runaway shows. But does it mean that short girls can't be models? Have their dreams being shattered? Those who approached modelling agencies can testify to being told to give up their dreams. In the United States, Tyra Banks answered the plead of short girls who dream of becoming top models by creating a show called America's Next top model. She saw no reason why shorter girls shouldn't have the opportunity to try their success. What's the big deal in choosing girls towering 1.8m? The right message is to ensure short girls that they too have an equal chance getting into the business. Most models have heard of Kate Moss. Wasn't she short? With that height she managed to become one of the world's most successful supermodels. Now more than 20 years have passed since she entered the business but her career is very much still alive. Laetita Casta proved in the modelling industry that one can definitely reach the top even if your height doesn't. Most of you, have watched 2 Fast 2 Furious or DOA (Dead or Alive), then you would certainly know Devon Aoki. The short American model who has created a reputation for herself as a successful on and off catwalk model as well as an actress.
The bottom line is that if a girl is shorter and wants to get into modeling, a good way to get started would be to contact a modeling agency that specialises in Commercial Print or Promotional Modeling. It’s important to focus and channel that dream of becoming a top model onto the right direction in terms of what you can offer. Shorter models can model just as taller ones can, but as a shorter girl you should look at modeling as more than just fashion modeling. For any kind of modeling not requiring a specific height, a shorter model can find herself well on her way to success. This could be by promoting other types of products and even ultimately becoming the face of a fashion ad campaign. What many people fail to remember is that modeling is just as much about personality as it is of looks. Focus on bringing out the most in you by being realistic from the get go as to what your strong traits are and what kind of modeling is best suited for you. The sooner you’re able to do that, that faster you can be on your way of creating yourself a success story of your own, just like Dame Lesley Lawson DBE, Twiggy did as the first teenage model back in the 60’s, and like Kate, Laetitia and Devon were able to do more recently. Don’t let your height devalue your prospect of becoming a successful model. On the contrary, make it work for you in other ways. If you’re a shorter model who has a story to tell, or if you’re a girl who feels that her height just won’t cut it, tell us about it.
